The giving and receiving of nurturing touch is a fundamental human need and there is a long history of massage extending through many centuries and across most cultures. The art of massage is probably as old as man himself, because to hold or rub an injured part is an instinctive reaction when we are in pain. As long a go as the Roman Empire, a famous physician, Galen, favored massage for the treatment of injuries and certain diseases.
Galen wrote: “Massage eliminates the waste products of nutrition and poisons of fatigue”
